“Boost affiliate sales!” Something we all wish we knew the secret to when we were newbies. Well, I’m dishing all the secrets expert bloggers don’t want you to know so you can double & triple your income. It’s not impossible to make money online blogging. It’s actually pretty easy!
A product launch: something that every online entrepreneur fears, especially as a beginner. That’s why there needs to be a strategy in place every time you launch, but everyone makes mistakes. Here I list the mistakes I made when I failed my recent product launch.
Like every other entrepreneur, I went into business for myself to have financial freedom, work on my own terms, and be able to support my lifestyle by making passive income online doing something I love. After rebranding, creating an FB community full of my dream clients.
I’ve done multiple free trainings in my FB group so I decided it was time to create and launch a live course. I started creating the outline and had the content planned out. Getting comfortable being on camera, I decided to do two live trainings in relation to the topic of the course. In the end, I pitched my course and then waited for the sales to come.
Later that day, I sent out emails to my list with the replay and announced my course again with discounts and letting my list know that the cart will be closing in a couple days. I got clicks to the website, but no one was buying. It’s the first day. I didn’t panic…..until 3 days later!
3 days, no sales. Just clicks to the sales page. I did get compliments on the copy, but that was it. You can take a look here if you want. It….was…DEVASTATING! I told myself I would give it one more day. Another day went by and crickets…..I scrapped the launch, cried in the corner and then tried to figure out exactly what went wrong. After actually going over the launch strategy, I figured out 7 things that made me fail my course launch.
I was totally embarrassed! After taking a day of feeling sorry for myself, I decided that I should write a blog post warning others not to make the same mistakes I made when it’s time for their product launch. Many of us don’t talk about our failures, but I think it’s important because it shows the world that we’re still humans. We mess up and as entrepreneurs, it’s destiny to mess up, but as long as we learn from those mistakes, we’re able to be, do, and have whatever we want. Enough with the small talk. Here’s:
7 Ways to Fail a Product Launch
1. Not having a plan
The WORST thing you can ever do is not have a plan! Creating a plan gives you structure. It keeps the content creation process organized and right on time so no other task spills into the other causing a delay. Without a plan, you’ll be all over the place. This is the time to stay organized and productive.
2. Not validating my idea
Another grave mistake. You ALWAYS want to validate your idea on a digital product. You don’t want to invest all this time or money on something your dream clients (or anyone else for that matter) don’t really want or need. Save yourself the heartache and the headache.
3. Not asking my dream clients what they wanted
This ties into validating an idea. If you have a Facebook group, an email list, or loyal followers on Instagram, ASK THEM WHAT THEY WANT! They’re there for a reason. Your mission is to serve them and help them reach their dreams and goals. Why not ask them what they want or would like to see you create or speak on next.
4. Not nurturing my email list
If there’s one thing you can do to completely screw up your chances of creating passive income, it’s by NOT paying attention to your email list. Social media platforms are not guaranteed to be here forever. For all we know, they could shut down tomorrow. The one thing that’s forever is your email list.
You worked so hard for those dream clients and then to not nurture them with attention even if it’s just once a week is a travesty. UGH! I still can’t believe I did this one. I sprung this course on them and they didn’t even know it was in creation nor did they probably even need it! Not to mention, I only sent out 3 emails.
5. Not having a launch strategy
Could I have been any crazier? Like, this is one of the MOST important parts of a product launch and I didn’t even have a launch strategy. I just started throwing posts up on Instagram, in different Facebook groups, threw some pins up on Pinterest, and thought I was done. I’m cringing as I look back on this.
6. Not creating awareness
Creating awareness is apart of the launch strategy, but very important enough to be its own mistake. Like I said before, my email list wasn’t even aware that I was creating a product. My Facebook group knew, but that was about it. By creating awareness the correct way, I could’ve gotten way more eyes on my product AND made some sales. Just craziness!
7. Not starting with a low priced product
That’s right. Instead of creating a low priced product to get used to my dream clients and customers purchasing from me and making sure my teachings resonate with them and fit their learning styles, I went straight for a product that was over $100. Over $200 actually. Like really, Tia? Really?
The Wrap Up
From these 7 mistakes, you can just see how and why my product launch was a complete #FAIL! This is expected from entrepreneurs the first time around. That’s why it’s always necessary to evaluate and tweak your strategies as you go along. It wasn’t a failure to me if you want me to be honest.
“Tia, how was it NOT a failure? You didn’t make any sales. Not even ONE! Most people make at least one.” I hear what you’re saying, but a lot of people compare the word failure with giving up, and that’s not what I plan to do. Instead, I took this as just a big mindset shift.
What’s a mindset shift? A mindset shift is when you finally start understanding what others were saying or when you finally start seeing something in a different light. This finally made me understand why so many experts say to work backward, that you’re always in the launch phase, and launching starts when you first decide that you’re going to create a product.
Ever since then, everything has been falling into place for me. I even started creating a product just from learning these valuable lessons, but this time I’m doing it right lol. Tell me, have you ever had a product launch or service launch fail? What did you do about it? What did you learn? Let’s talk about it in the comments! Thank you so much for taking the time to read this post! Truly grateful!
Are you a newbie entrepreneur and want to build an online business in 2018? Learn 3 ways newbie entrepreneurs sabotage their online business!
First of all,
Congratulations on starting your own online business! Not everyone has the courage to embark on the entrepreneur journey. That means you’re among the elite that likes to take risks and go against social norms.
How is it going so far? Are you finding great success? Could you maybe need to make small tweaks here and there? Or are you completely lost on what to do next? No matter where you are in your journey, you’re exactly where you need to be. Let’s talk about your online business strategy.
What is an online business strategy?
A business strategy is a blueprint for how you’re going to market your business. It’s an action plan explaining what content you’re going to put out, what platforms you’re going to use to promote your business, how you decide to turn a profit with your business, etc.
In order to find your sweet spot, you have to go through trial and error. It’s a necessity for entrepreneurship.
As you know with entrepreneurship comes rookie mistakes, but some are worse than others. I want to make sure you’re not making these crucial mistakes that can severely sabotage your business.
1. Not having a business plan.
It is very crucial that you have a business plan. This was a huge newbie entrepreneur mistake I made in my business when I first started in Feb 2016.
I was so excited to start my blog that I went and bought my domain, hosting package, all the things, but had no clue on what my niche was, who my dream clients were, content strategy, marketing, how I was going to make money from it, nothing!
Because of this, I was lost in my business for a full year. I talked about what I thought others wanted to hear. making money online. Even though it did bring in almost $1k just blogging for 4-6 months, my heart wasn’t in it.
When you do something because someone else is doing so, it doesn’t resonate with you in the long run. This actually happens to a newbie entrepreneur all the time when their purpose and message isn’t defined right away.
You start to struggle with content creation. Creating products and services become stressful because you don’t really know your audience and their struggles.
You may earn money, but you feel as though you’re a fraud because you’re just doing what others are doing. Imposter syndrome starts to set in.
It can start interfering with self-care because this is something you wanted to take full-time or at least until you can substitute your 9-5c income, but you’re just not seeing it happen anymore.
2. Improper goal-setting.
The infamous goal setting topic we’ve been taught since childhood. Didn’t know there was a right or wrong way to set goals? I mean, I wouldn’t say there was a right or wrong way, but there are ways to be more effective when goal setting such as this strategy I use in my business here.
When you’re improperly setting goals, usually you’re just writing down a list of things that you want or need to be accomplished and then pushing it aside.
There’s no real action plan for achieving those goals. You start completing a task and then remember you have to do something else before you can complete it so you put that project on hold and start working on that.
Another day, you may see that there’s another moving part to make that goal more achievable so that becomes a top priority. Once again, you stop working on that project and jump to this one.
There’s no real focus, no real action plan. Nothing is being completed. This is a very ineffective way to goal setting and as a newbie entrepreneur within your first year, this is something you DEFINITELY want to avoid.
This can also be referred to as “shiny object syndrome.” Don’t worry, this is something EVERY entrepreneur has done in their first year. Just one of the perks of entrepreneurship lol.
3. Working from a “lack” mindset.
What is a lack mindset?
A lack mindset is where you put all your energy and focus on something you lack or don’t have enough such as email subscribers or income goals.
This creates a negative energy that is being communicated with the Universe. Everything is energy. Your body, your thoughts, your emotions, your actions, it’s energy also known as vibes.
When you let off certain energy or vibes, you attract that same energy or vibe from elsewhere. Ever woke up late for work so you start scrambling to get ready? Do you stub your toe on the corner of the bed frame or spill coffee on your favorite shirt?
Well, I can tell you the moment you started feeling negative energy towards this day, the Universe picked up on it and figured that it was something you wanted because that’s where your focus was the most. This can easily happen to a newbie entrepreneur because this is new territory.
An example of working on your business from a lack mindset is when you’re creating a new stream of income.
You created a product you just know your dream clients and customers will love. You did all the proper research on what struggles they have the most. The content based on the most effective way they interact with your content and you have a promotion strategy that dominates the social platform that helps increase your business engagement.
All of this work, but you’re getting little to no sales. Now, you’re starting to worry. Fear and doubt start to kick into overdrive. You know you did everything right, but your launch is crickets. Fear is one of the strongest emotional energies we as humans experience.
When you’re letting your fear take over in desperation, you start scrambling to see where your launch strategy went wrong. Because you’re afraid that you won’t hit your goals or you were hoping on this launch to pay some bills, you’re operating in a mindset of lack.
Lack of sales, lack of money, lack of engagement with your social media strategy and so on. All of this energy is focused on what you DON’T want, you’re preventing the results you DO want. Emotion is one of the three strongest ways to manifest whatever you want.
All of that negative energy and emotion is being communicated with the Universe and because it’s so strong, that’s what the Universe interprets what you want the most so she reciprocates that energy quicker, producing more of what you DON’T want.
How to Reverse the Negative Energy Exchange
It’s very important that whenever something isn’t going the way you want in your business, try NOT to focus so much on it. Yes, you may acknowledge it, but once you start dwelling for too long and let yourself slip into that lack mindset and feel those sad, negative emotions, that’s what starts registering with the Universe.
Instead, what you want to do is focus on the feelings you’ll have when this goal is finally reached. List those emotions on a piece of paper and focus or meditate on those emotions. This will replace the negative energy that’s being communicated with the Universe and she’ll instead reciprocate those happy emotions.
Did you make these same mistakes? What are some other mistakes you’ve made as a newbie entrepreneur?
Get your blog up and running without breaking the bank
You’ve finally decided to be a blogger? CONGRATS!! Let me tell you, it’s the best decision you’ll ever make. It was for me at least. Not that long ago, I was newbie blogger so I know exactly the feeling you’re having. You’re either excited and can’t wait to publish your first post, OR you’re scared as hell because you don’t even know where to start. Am I right so far? Most likely.
So, you’re ready to start your new blogging journey…
As a mother of two little girls, I would absolutely ADORE the opportunity to create an online business so I can be a stay at home mom AND make a full-time income from home.
When I was 5-6 months pregnant with Laila, I started heavily looking for online jobs. I wanted to be able to have some type of income while on maternity leave until I was cleared to go back to work.
My mom told me to start a blog. I knew NOTHING about blogging, but that meant I had to do some in-depth research before I decided to commit to blogging. Every day after work, I had a pen and paper in hand trying to learn as much as I could about blogging.
One night at 2 am, I purchased both my domain name and hosting package. I’d come home from work and slowly put my blog together little by little. I would wake up tired. but looking forward to coming home from work.
I was placed on emergency maternity leave due to a condition called placenta previa where my placenta was too low. Shortly after submitting my paperwork, I was fired on maternity leave.
Why? I have no clue, but instead of being mad, it sparked a fire inside me.In that moment, I knew I was DONE working my butt off to make someone else’s dream come true. I was ready to have my own business. I wanted a business that let me stay home with my two daughters and make money to support us.
I was determined to make this new venture in my business. I started to pour every dollar, sweat, tear, whatever I had to do to get my blog up and running. 3 months later, I was doing pretty good.
I had my daughter, I made my first income in April with affiliate marketing, and I released my course, Become an Affiliate Blogger. I still wasn’t progressing as I’d hoped. Come to find out, I was treating my blog as just a regular blog.
In order for my blog to be a business, I had to treat it as a business. I had no direction, no business plan, nothing. I didn’t even know where to begin. I was feeling lost and unsure of myself and doubted my blog could be a business so I got my shit together in 7 steps:
1) Changing Your Mindset
This is a crucial part of being able to build your online business. It is mandatory to have the entrepreneurial mindset to run an online business.
This journey is going to take you to hell and back. If you’re the type to crack under pressure or freak out over the smallest thing, this isn’t for you.
You’re going to have really good days and along with those bad days that will break you like you’ve never been broken before. You need to know now that it can take weeks, months, and maybe even years before your business gets the exposure you need.
This job takes a great amount of determination and non-stop dedication to make it thrive. Be ready to do WHATEVER it takes. My mindset changed when I came across this resource and after I joined this group of AWESOME entrepreneurs. Check it out when you have time.
Because we’re trying to build a business, we need to have a steady focus. Without focus, you’ll be all over the place which can cost you time and money.
I should know since I was lost for almost two months. No business plan whatsoever. No direction, no focus, no goals, NADA! Looking back, I realized I lost money AND left money on the table! Like wtf Tia?
To prevent the same from happening to you, what is the main niche or focus of your business? Are you going to build a store? What will the store contain? Is it a blog? What is your niche?
After you figure out what the focus of your business will be, it’s time to determine your…..
3) Perfect Customer
This is one of the main moving parts of your business. This needs to be defined before you do anything else! It’s really easy so don’t panic. Just answer these short questions, but make sure you put some thought into it. The more specific you are, the better designed your products will be.
2. Male or Female
3. In College or Graduate
4. Kids or No Kids
5. Single, Married or Divorced
6. Stay at Home Parent or Working Parent
7. What is their salary range?
*Remember, the more specific you are, the better your products will be designed*
You know how everyone asks what your goals are just to be nosy? Well, this time you really need to know what they are.
These will help you know what direction to guide your business in. How much money are you trying to make?
What products and services are you trying to provide? Why? What is the goal of your product or service? With your goals, you’re going to need a budget.
What is the minimum you can invest in your business? What is the max you can invest? After all bills are paid, how much do you think you can add to your budget?
Knowing how to schedule the time to work on your business is another important aspect of running an online business. This is a huge venture and you have to split your time wisely. This is really important if you have a full-time or part-time job.
If you’re a stay at home and full-time online business owner, you would probably schedule the time to work on your business early in the morning, during nap time, and when they go to bed for the night.
Depending on what time you have to be at work in the morning and what time you come home at night, try to schedule at least 2-3 hours to work on your business.
Sit down with a pen and paper on your lunch break or when the kids are asleep and come up with a tailored schedule of when you can afford to work on your business.
You’re going to need a really good email marketing service to send your customers updates, upsells, customer service, etc. There are really great options for beginners such as MailMunch, Mailerlite, but I HIGHLY recommend Convertkit.
Convertkit is the perfect email marketing software for beginner online business owners. The built-in landing pages are easy to customize for the bloggers who aren’t so tech savvy, easily convert readers into subscribers with opt in forms, AND the newly added feature for visual sales funnel and email seq flow charts to show how far your subs are in the funnels! Get your free 30 day trial and start building that list girly!
Okay so our website is built, we picked a free or affordable theme and customized it to our liking, and we chose the best email marketing tool to fit our needs. Now, we need people to launch your business to, which brings me to step 7…..
I love this part! In order to have a profitable launch, you’re going to need a community to launch to. You have to get out there and make connections! Nowadays with all this technology booming, it’s pretty easy. Here are some tips to start networking:
Join Facebook Groups
Join Pinterest Boards
Join LinkedIn Groups
Join Twitter Chats
Join Instagram Pods
Find and Join Masterminds
Being around like-minded entrepreneurs give you this unexplainable kick in the butt you need to keep going. No matter where you are in building your business, it’s nothing like having a community of your peers to look for advice and encouragement.
These are MY personal 7 steps to building a successful online business, but I want to also dedicate this post to Monica from Redefining Mom.
She is freaking AWESOME! She is one of few inspirational, successful online business moms that have inspired me to pursue my dream of becoming an online business owner.
I recently went through a high-risk pregnancy with my second daughter, Laila. She was very premature and we ended up staying in the NICU for almost a month. When we got home, that whole experience lit a fire under me.
I told myself when I got home I needed to find a way to turn my blog into a full-blown at home business. I did so much research that following month and I became stressed out.
Nothing I tried was working. I spent over $300 in courses and ebooks trying to gain as much knowledge as I could, but still nothing…..until I checked my email one day. I forgot I signed up for Monica’s email list after I joined her Convertkit Masterclass.
This email was about Busy Moms Building. This course is Monica’s personal strategy she used to grow her online business, Redefining Mom. I felt like the Universe heard my pleas because I was literally on the verge of quitting Everyday Tia and looking for a job.
I felt like I was a failure. No matter what I did, it failed. What I realized was I didn’t have a business plan! I didn’t have a business plan, I didn’t have clarified goals, my focus was too broad, I didn’t have a set schedule, and I sucked at building an email list.
When I checked out the course’s overview, I was sold. Everything I lacked, she covered in every single video lesson, tutorial, and I was able to use her corresponding workbook along with a budget planner, a launch spreadsheet, and more FREE bonuses valued at almost $200!
Not to mention, she had awesome guest expert interviews that helped explain the legalities and financial responsibilities. There are so many moving pieces behind building a business, but Monica made them so easy to understand.
I was able to implement something new with every lesson and to my surprise, it didn’t take any time for me to see the results of my investment.
Ever since completing her course, my business plan is clear-cut and precise, I filed my tax paperwork for my business, AND I’m already seeing ROIs for my Become an Affiliate Blogger course!!!
If you don’t know who Monica is, here’s a little information:
Monica is a full-time mom and a successful online business owner. She quit her job after 11 YEARS at a Fortune 100 company in pursuit of her dream: owning a successful online business that is now Redefining Mom. She did it in 12 easily implemented steps that she has decided to share with other mompreneurs like us! If you want to learn more about Monica, click here.
Busy Moms Building doesn’t require you to have a blog, be a mom or a parent period to participate. Whether you have a full-time job or you’re an entrepreneur, if you are truly ready to commit to having an online business to give you the financial freedom you deserve, this course is for you. Not ready for a full course, grab the ebook and workbook to get you started!
Please don’t be the person I was that was working harder and not smarter. Create a business plan, declare your goals for your business, and implement those plans asap!
It is totally understandable if you’re on a blogging budget. Everyone doesn’t start with the same amount of money when starting their blog. I emptied my account which was under $50 at the time to start my blog. Do not feel like that is what you have to do to start a blog. Everyone’s journey is different. Go with what you can afford. The most successful bloggers started on a budget so do not feel embarrassed. (more…)
